Travel from Bucharest in a small vehicle with up to seven passengers, stopping at Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Poenari Citadel, Vidraru Dam, Capra Waterfall, and Bâlea Lake. English-speaking guides such as Sebastian, Matei, Andrei, and George are praised for safe driving, useful commentary, and flexible photo stops.

“This was a great trip. The views were breath taking (we got to experience the first snow of the mountain), our guide Sebastian was very knowledgeable and helpful, and even though we were unable to see bears on this trip (too cold and wet in the mountains) I would do this tour again. I would highly recommend this trip and if possible make it a trip for 2-3 but I have no doubt that a group of more wouldn't be great. I would also plan to come late spring to mid summer. The bears should be more active. But respect the bears and their distance.”

“What an amazing day trip!! We were picked up by Sergiu and he took us to some very spectacular scenery. We were very luck to have seen a bear and his baby. The only downside to it was the long drive... about 4 hrs to arrive to transfagarasan road however we had a few nice stops along the way.”

“We had a well organised and planned trip with our guide, Sebastian. He was knowledgeable on the history of the region and took us to the best locations. The only small criticism would be that Sebastian was very softly spoken, making it difficult to hear him when sitting at the back of his minibus. A microphone would easily solve this though.”

Spend about 12 hours crossing Romania’s Carpathians from Bucharest to Vidraru Dam, Capra Waterfall, and Bâlea Lake on the Transfăgărășan Highway. An English-speaking guide such as Emanuel, Pavel, or Paul explains the route, while bear sightings remain possible but never guaranteed.

“This is a summer activity for sure. Even he tour says roads may close October through winter. However, early October was available to book so we booked second week of October hoping the weather wouldn’t get cold yet to enjoy the drive. The driver told us bears probably went hibernating, which is fine. Bear sighting wasn’t my top priority. I went for the top view of hairpin turns and Lake Balea but left disappointed seeing nothing due to poor weather. My complaint is that the tour agency and guides knew that the weather has already changed a week ago and did not proactively cancel the trip. Most shops at lake…”

“It’s a long day but the “Top Gear” road and seeing the bears make it all worth while. We had a spectacular day and our guide Matt kept us well informed of all relevant facts, as well as leading some interesting discussions about world travel. Have paid twice as much for a tour half as good several times before. Can recommend.”

“Most memorable was the driver not wearing a seat belt, the driver texting and talking on his phone the entire return trip. I think he forgot he was at work. We thought him texting while driving was totally unprofessional not to mention illegal, If you get a good driver the views are lovely and treehouse restaurant for lunch was excellent.”

“awful experience. I booked 2 says prior to going. the guide that showed up was not the guide who was booked and messaged the group. he smelled bad, drove 90mph in a 60 zone with one of the seatbelt broken, he was rude and didn't try to give us a good experience. he messaged us all day before staying we won't see bears..yet that's what advertised. he didn't show/till us where we were or answer any questions.. he just snapped the entire time..apparently his name was Sebastian.. we don't think it was. I want a refund!”
